Rob Cross returned to the winners' circle by winning Players Championship 22 in Wigan on Wednesday, overcoming Maik Kuivenhoven in a surprise final. The victory comes amid a turbulent period for the 2018 world champion, who recently announced his split with his wife Georgia. Despite the personal turmoil, Cross produced a dominant display to claim his first ProTour title in over a year.
Speaking after the final, Cross admitted that outside noise has been difficult to escape but that he thrives when he can block it out. "I always thought I was going to win, and when I'm like that, usually I do win," he assessed. "I've had my trials and tribulations. I've got a lot going on at the minute. If I can get the best out of my capabilities I believe I can win every day, but sometimes mentally it can hold you back."
The victory also virtually secured Cross's place in the World Matchplay, a tournament he has previously won. He averaged 98.91 in the final and reflected on his recent resurgence. "Three months ago you look at the World Matchplay [race] and I'm out of it. I'm probably £15,000 adrift, but I managed to give myself a good kick up the backside," he said. "I know the World Matchplay is around the corner, and I love the World Matchplay. It's all about results, and to win this today is very special for me."
Cross, known for his ability to come from nowhere when seemingly dead and buried, now sets his sights on Blackpool. "I've still got a great support behind me, and if I can carry on playing the way I am, I still think I'm dangerous to the top boys in the world," he added.
