Peter Wright’s prized major trophies have been the subject of a viral video showing them set to be given away, but his wife and manager, Jo Wright, has firmly denied that they were ever meant to be sold. The two-time world champion’s 2021 World Matchplay trophy and 2020 PDC World Darts Championship trophy were featured in a live broadcast, alongside a signed frame with pictures of ‘Snakebite’ en route to the title. However, Jo Wright took to X to set the record straight.
“No they aren’t for sale. They wasn’t approved to be sold. They belong to our children,” she wrote in a tweet replying to the video. The clarification comes after speculation that Wright had decided to offload some of his most cherished accomplishments, with the trophies apparently being offered on a competition site. Wright has previously spoken about getting rid of his trophies and focusing on the future, but his wife insists the items were not authorised for sale.
Wright, a darting icon and former world number one, has won eight major ranking titles and two World Cup of Darts with Scotland. However, his last major title came at the 2023 European Championship, and he has been on a downward trajectory in form. He will not be at the World Matchplay for the first time since 2012 as he tries to rediscover the spark that brought him those major trophies. The video and subsequent reaction have sparked concern among fans, with one posting: “Is he skint? Has he fallen out of love with darts? … This is incredibly sad.”
