Former professional darter Colin Lloyd believes Cameron Menzies has what it takes to break into the world's top ten, comparing the Scot's game to two-time world champion Gary Anderson. The current world number 26 has impressed on the ProTour since 2024, winning three titles, and Lloyd insists the 37-year-old's heavy scoring makes him a genuine threat at the highest level.
“He's class, but I don't know about top three. He could definitely be in the top 10. He's a very, very good player, Cammy. He's a very heavy hitter. He scores very, very heavily,” Lloyd said. Menzies reached his first European Tour semi-final earlier this year at the International Darts Open, where Ross Smith whitewashed him 7-0. His biggest career victory came at the World Matchplay in July, where he stunned Luke Humphries 10-7 before withdrawing due to health issues.
Lloyd sees striking parallels between Menzies and Anderson, particularly in their doubling struggles. “When he's clicking out his doubles, he reminds me actually of someone like Gary Anderson. I don't mean it in the fact that they're both Scottish and all stuff like that. Gary Anderson has always been a fantastic dart player, always scores heavy. But in the early part of his career, his doubling used to let him down,” Lloyd explained. He noted that Anderson could have won even more before his game came together, leading to back-to-back world titles and worldwide dominance.
While Lloyd doesn't expect Menzies to match Anderson's honours list, he sees huge potential. “I don't think Cammy can achieve what Gary's done, but he can certainly put himself in the frame where people are talking about him and talking about him all for the right reasons for being a great dart player.” However, he identified a key area for improvement: emotional control. Menzies has been known for on-stage outbursts, including banging a table at the World Championship and rolling on the floor at the European Darts Trophy after missing a double.
Off stage, Lloyd describes Menzies as “one of the nicest fellas you'll ever meet,” always signing autographs and smiling for fans. But he insists the next step must come from within. “You can always give people advice, but ultimately, you have to do it yourself. You have to control your emotions, and when you get opportunities you have to grab them yourself, because no one's going to grab them for you, and that's what Cammy's got to do.”
