Luke Humphries has revealed he came within a whisker of withdrawing from the Czech Darts Open due to a shoulder problem, only to battle through to the final in Prague. The former world champion, who ultimately lost to Luke Littler, admitted he was ready to pull out on Thursday but was glad he stayed, saying: “I was going to pull out on Thursday, and I made the final, so I can’t be too upset with myself because I did really well.”
Humphries had confirmed earlier in the weekend that he had to return to his usual physio for treatment on the issue, and while he said it still wasn’t great, he acknowledged the help had been hugely beneficial in even getting him to the oche. Despite the setback, the 31-year-old produced a stunning run, beginning with an impressive victory over Beau Greaves, averaging just under 109 points per visit. He then eliminated Andrew Gilding, William O’Connor, and Gerwyn Price to reach the final.
In the final, Humphries once again came up against his nearest rival, Luke Littler, who prevented him from winning the title in Prague for the fourth time. The world number one eventually came out on top, but Humphries took home £15,000 in prize money for his runner-up finish. Reflecting on his run, he said: “It’s been a great run for me, making four out of five finals.”
Humphries was also full of praise for the Czech crowd, with whom he has developed a special connection. “I’m happy that I’ve had a good run and come back to see these amazing people, the fans; they’re just amazing,” he said. He added: “That’s why I’ll be here every year. It’s my favourite Euro Tour on the calendar. They’re so respectful, it’s amazing.”
Despite Littler’s victory, Humphries fought until the very end, and he highlighted the world champion’s 130 checkout as a crucial moment. “I never give up, especially in finals. I know that Luke is obviously going to throw everything at me - that 130 was a big shot,” he said. Looking ahead, Humphries is determined to keep the pressure on Littler over the coming months: “Hopefully over the next four months, I push him. If he does the clean sweep, he has to do it the hard way!”
