Top seed Luke Humphries crashed out of the Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest, suffering a shock 6-3 defeat at the hands of Dirk van Duijvenbode in the second round. The 31-year-old world number two, who entered the tournament at this stage, could only muster an average of 92.67 as his title hopes evaporated.
Van Duijvenbode, 34, ranked 21st in the world, produced a moment of magic when leading 4-3, hitting a superb 140 checkout to seal the victory and dump the reigning World Champion out of the competition.
Meanwhile, three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen showed his resilience, recovering from a 3-1 deficit to beat James Hurrell 6-4 and avoid an early exit. The 37-year-old will now face Nathan Aspinall, who defeated Ryan Joyce by the same 6-4 scoreline.
Jonny Clayton and Gary Anderson also progressed with comfortable wins, while Gian van Veen, Dave Chisnall, Josh Rock, Stephen Bunting, Chris Dobey, Danny Noppert, Ryan Searle and Ross Smith all advanced to the next round.
Rob Cross, who narrowly beat Beau Greaves on her European Tour debut in the first round, followed up by defeating Luke Woodhouse to book his place in the last 16.
