Luke Humphries continued his remarkable record in Leicester by claiming his fourth Players Championship title of 2026, defeating Niels Zonneveld 8-4 in Wednesday’s final at the Mattioli Arena.
The world number three made a triumphant return to the venue, having last appeared in Leicester when he lifted his second World Grand Prix crown last month, and once again proved his liking for the surroundings. Humphries has now won three of his four Players Championship appearances in Leicester this season, with Wednesday’s success providing a timely boost ahead of the upcoming Grand Slam of Darts.
It was an especially satisfying victory given the illness which forced him to withdraw from the recent European Championship, with the 31-year-old admitting that he had initially been unsure how his fitness would hold up. “The way I’ve been the last few weeks, it’s an unexpected win for myself,” Humphries reflected. “It was more about coming back and seeing what my energy levels were like, because I’ve been very ill the past few weeks. I’d never miss a major if I could play. I was devastated. I was on a good run after winning the World Grand Prix. Four Players Championship wins, a Euro Tour, the World Grand Prix, a win on the World Series; I’ve done some good things this year. I think my yearly average is better than it’s ever been. I still want to win another major. If it’s not the Grand Slam or Players Championship Finals, then I want it to be the World Championship. That’s the thing I really search for now, is to try and put my name in the legacy of some of the greatest there has ever been. I am far away from that yet, so I need to try and win a lot more.”
Humphries’ route to the title gathered momentum after an unconvincing 6-2 opening-round victory over Archie Self. He responded in emphatic fashion, recording consecutive whitewash wins against Darius Labanauskas and Tom Bissell, averaging 106 and 110 respectively to book his place in the last 16. The former World Champion continued his charge with back-to-back 6-2 successes over Steve Lennon and Gerwyn Price, setting up a blockbuster semi-final against Gary Anderson. Despite facing a formidable opponent averaging 106.75, Humphries held his nerve in a thrilling encounter to secure his place in the showpiece. And the Englishman produced another assured performance against Zonneveld, using two 12-dart breaks of throw to establish control before finishing the contest in style with an 11-dart hold. A 103.77 average completed a convincing 8-4 victory and another trophy for Cool Hand.
For Zonneveld, defeat brought an end to another impressive run in a breakthrough year, with the newly crowned Dutch Darts Championship winner reaching his second PDC ranking final of 2026. The Dutchman began his campaign with three consecutive 6-4 victories, including an outstanding 107.14 average against Jack Aldridge, before continuing his progress with wins over compatriots Jeffrey de Zwaan and Dirk van Duijvenbode. He then produced one of the biggest results of the afternoon by defeating Michael van Gerwen 7-5 in a compelling semi-final to reach the final. Van Gerwen had earlier underlined his quality with a magnificent 114.15 average in a whitewash victory over Danny Noppert, but was unable to find a way past Zonneveld.
Anderson was also among the last four, continuing his impressive form with victories over Rob Cross, Wessel Nijman and Raymond van Barneveld. The Scottish legend’s run to the semi-finals also moved him into the provisional qualification places for the Players Championship Finals in Minehead. There was further encouragement for Van Barneveld, who took a significant step towards securing his place at the World Darts Championship by reaching his second ProTour quarter-final of the season. The five-time World Champion was joined in the last eight by fellow Dutchmen Van Duijvenbode and Noppert, while Price completed the quarter-final line-up and confirmed his qualification for the Players Championship Finals. Henry Coates remains in the final provisional qualification position for Minehead after producing ton-plus averages in victories over James Wade and Mervyn King, before his run was ended by Price in the third round. The 20-year-old has also moved into the provisional World Championship qualification places, edging ahead of David Sharp, who suffered a nine-dart defeat against Tommy Lishman.
The 2026 PDC ProTour campaign now reaches its conclusion with Players Championship 34 on Thursday, as the final places for the Players Championship Finals are decided ahead of the season-ending event in Minehead.
